Slate Floor Tiles - Stone Effect and Slate Effect Range of Tiles
Slate - About the stone and usage in floor tiles
Slate as a stone is a dark grey, blue or green rock. When mined it is cut forming flat sheets of rock which can then be used in flooring or is alternatively popular in roofing. Slate as a construction material has been used for hundreds of years and is particularly beneficial due to it's low water absorption rate. This also makes it more resistant to frost and water damage than other alternatives in outdoor areas.
For floor tiles, as mentioned it has a low water absorption rate so when properly sealed and installed with a damp proof membrane, slate flooring can be watertight and last for many many years in domestic situations. When wet slate does become slippery particularly in areas of rain so please be careful if you choose to externally install. For interior installations like the kitchen, the floor won't be damaged by the water (if installed correctly) however due to the slippage factor associated with stone tiles, it's important to clean up any spillages immediately for safety reasons. This is not just restricted to stone, you should apply this philosophy for any floor.
